From 2012-04-21 BAD BRAINS

since moving out to DC ive been snoozing pretty bad on lives, though i did spend 6 months in fairfax bumblefuck. from what i can remember, heres the word:

dinosaur jr @ 9:30
man, i forgot lives here never start on time. the opening band was an old school hardcore act that i didnt really care for, forget what they were called but they seemed to be well known =\

ive been waiting years to finally see dinosaur jr live, and man they were playing my favorite album BUG! j mascis is fucking boss as shit, i took peoples advice and brought earplugs with me but i think ill try next time without them

for "dont" they asked an audience member to sing which was cool cause lou said his voice was dead after one show of singing it haha

after their set, they took requests. j was ready to play thumb, but lou said he didnt play on green mind so they didnt do thumb :((((((((((

however i was screaming sludgefeast for a minute straight, and got my wish! they closed the show with raisins. man i wished they did the lung but o well maybe next time

overall it was great, i just wish people were more hype and jumpin around havin a good time. no pics cause theyre on my old phone and its not with me anymore (I GUESS IT DIDNT FUCKIN HAPPEN THEN)

bad brains @ howard theater
wow so i had just gotten into bad brains and was lucky to catch an extra show on 4/21.... i wish i had been there 4/20 but whatever. anyways GZA opened and i wish i listened to more wu tang and east coast rap, i couldnt get into it that much. BUT man did he shit on some poor dude in the crowd that gave him the finger. GZA stopped in the middle of the song and just called the poor guy out, straight dissed him and then sent his personal bouncer after him. howard theatre security had to intervene THEMSELVES and save the poor guy from getting his ass beat. the guy did look like a total douche though, why you gotta wear sunglasses indoors man? looked like some dick frat boy

the other opening band was fucking great, they were a mix of funk reggae nu metal, but shit i forgot their name DIU FEAR NUTTIN, i would pay to see them live again

o yeah howard theatre is a pretty awesome venue, very upscale from the run of the mill live house, there were tons of employees in formal clothing everywhere and it also features some theater style balconies (DERP its in its name)

finally the legendary bad brains. these guys have been going at it since middle of the 70s i think and were the forerunners of punk and hardcore. HR has smoked wayyyyyyy to much pot and he was just in his own land the whole time, he had a guitar but i dont think it was even plugged in at all. DR KNOW still kills it on guitar, and the rhythm section is still kickin out grooves. they played a fair amount of reggae tunes, which everyone i enjoyed a lot. i shoulda manned up and joined the mosh pit, but some of those mother fuckers were just complete asshole dipshits fuckin faggots

i WISH i had seen them in their prime, geezer bad brains just doesnt cut it compared to youthful bad brains. their older lives on youtube seem ridiculousa and way more  intense. it was a lot of fun

sebadoh @ black cat

my first chance to see yet another godlike indie band. the bassist/drummer played some trashy shit as the opening act, i wasnt really digging it =\ then lou came on for some solo stuff on ukelele, he even did poledo which was pretty cool

sebadoh played a decent amount of songs off bakesale, apparently their catalog is a lot bigger than i thought it was, i only recognized maybe 40% of the songs. it didnt seem they were into it either, but then again maybe they are just really really sarcastic. lou is a pretty funny guy though, he told everyone about how his kid goes to the same school as a bunch of hotshots, of which one particular hotshot had "calves of a champion" i dont know why lou told us this, but it was memorable to say the least

so the crowd was pretty fuckin lame, which made sebadoh real sarcastic? they just didnt seem to be enjoying it very much, although they did play a long encore and did explicitly seem thankful for the more die hard fans. he did say chicago was full of hipsters back in the day :(

mission of burma/purling hiss @ black cat

holy shit was i super excited for burma. but first the opening act purling hiss. im angry at myself for arriving late and missing some of their set, because they were great. the rhythm was really meh solid, but man the guitarist was ripping it with great riffs and very melodic leads. really reminded me of j mascis, the guy even kinda resembles him haha. anyway when they finished, i saw them pack their shit up and the guitarist actually brought a suitcase for his pedals and cables. when i saw this i told myself, fuck im gonna spoil myself soon, really should start practicing more and actually earning all that money ive spent on gear. sigh..... i wish they sold cds, but they only had vinyl so i got a pin ^_^

roger was offering earplugs before they started, but i didnt find the volume to be loud. they played a lot of stuff off of VS, and man these old dudes are still amazing. im really excited to listen to their new stuff. they are truly the forefathers of post punk. i just wished that they played revolver, TREMOLO, TREM2, and ALL WORLD COWBOYS ROMANCE!!!!!!!!!! QQQQQQQQQQ really great show though, this was the best show ive been to in DC so far

jesus & mary chain

i purposely came late because the opening bands profiles and samples didnt sound very interesting. i got there towards the end of the 2nd opening bands set, they played instrumental noisy shit. the drummer was aite, but i didnt like the rest of the band.

ok so honestly, ive only listened to psychocandy probably only like 3 times through at most. i guess i really only came for just like honey. i was surprised a lot of their songs sounded the same, and were poppy. i always assumed they did more noisy stuff.... which leads me to my rant

OMFG LEARN TO FUCKING CONTROL YOUR FEEDBACK. EITHER MESS WITH SETTINGS BEFOREHAND OR MUTE YOUR SHIT WHEN YOURE DONE PLAYING. YOU ACT LIKE A FUCKING AMATEUR DICKING AROUND TRYING TO KILL THE FEEDBACK WHEN YOU CAN JUST SWITCH CHANNELS ON THE AMP MOTHERFUCKER FUCK MY EARS BLEED ACTUALLY FUCK MY ROOMMATES CAUSE THEY MADE ME FORGET TO BRING MY EARPLUGS FUCK YOU COMMUNIST PIGS GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM ASSHOES

ok anyways the squealing feedback after and before every song killed it for me, my ears HAVE NOT RUNG after a show for a few years now. and they rang 4 DAYS STRAIGHT after. the feedback was not at all melodic and was the result of poor settings and also THAT FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT HOLLOW BODY GUITAR.

super broken boner
